When anyone hears the term root canal, they generally cringe and wince. People think of pain and drills and that’s usually what makes people afraid of the dentist to begin with. While yes, a root canal can be painful, the alternative can be even worse.
A root canal is needed when your tooth has become infected, also known as a tooth abscess. Some signs of an abscess include sensitivity to hot or cold, toothache, soreness while chewing, and a possible bad taste. The only sure way to prevent tooth infections is to take care of your teeth. Avoiding sugary foods and brushing and flossing regularly will keep you from getting cavities and abscesses.
The root canal procedure can usually be performed in one visit, but sometimes requires two. First your endodontist will apply a local anesthetic to numb the tooth, and isolate it with a “dental dam” to keep it free of saliva. The next step is the part that people seem to be most afraid of. Your endodontist has to create an opening into the crown of your tooth. From there they use very small instruments to remove all of the infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals. Then they shape both the pulp chamber and root canals for the filling. The root canals are usually filled with a substance called gutta-percha. Adhesive cement is placed over them to ensure that they are completely sealed. Usually, your endodontist will place a temporary filling in to end the procedure. Then you’ll have to see your regular dentist for the placement of the crown. The crown will protect your filling and allow abscessed bone to heal, restoring your tooth to full functionality. You shouldn’t bite or chew with the tooth until you’ve seen your dentist and had it completely restored and functional.
